What Are Good Family Dogs? A Primer on Picking the Perfect Pooch

    Good Family Dogs

How To Choose Good Family Dogs? Picking the Perfect Pooch.

Do you want to get a dog for your growing family? Do you want to learn what the ideal dog breed is for families with children? Are your kids hounding you to get a dog?

More families are adopting dogs in the US, with 67% of US households owning at least one dog. That may be a reason why you or your kids desire a pet canine.

However, as all parents do, you’re likely worrying about the right pooch to have as a family dog. Here, we’ll answer the question of what are good family dogs and more. Keep reading to learn more about the things you need to know before you get a family dog.

    1. Things to Consider When Getting a Family Dog

Before you adopt a dog, ask yourself a few questions. First, ask yourself if becoming a dog owner will fit and benefit your lifestyle. Where will the family dog sleep or do its thing?

Dogs need to have their space, especially big dog breeds. Other than that, dog ownership is expensive. Are you ready for the financial responsibility of having a dog?

Who will walk, feed, and bathe the dog? Who will buy its food and shampoo? Some dogs are also playful, so who will play with them?

As a parent, you will likely tell your child that caring for a dog is a big responsibility. However, this doesn’t mean that the child will take full responsibility for the dog. It is a family dog, after all. Everyone in the family needs to do their part to care for it to some extent.

Also, everyone in the family needs to be okay health-wise with having a dog. By that, nobody in the family should be allergic to dogs. Remember that you can’t treat allergies to animals by frequent exposure.

Finally, it’ll help to research basic knowledge on how to care for dogs. All first-time dog owners need to understand how much responsibility having a dog entails. That includes you and your partner and not only your children.

    1. Why Get a Family Dog?

Having pets at home has a lot of awesome benefits, especially dogs. Dogs help de-stress and the lower anxiety levels of their owners. They also increase the chances for owners to exercise and go outside to socialize.

Kids have a companion to play with and bond with. Children who grow up with dogs also find it easier to socialize. Dogs also boost the emotional development of children who grow up with them.

Another notable benefit is that having a family dog improves a child’s immunity and prevents allergies. Dog ownership encourages increased self-control too. A study found that teens have better self-control when they care for a pet compared to those who don’t have one.

Adults get more exercise when they go out to walk their dogs. Research also found that having a pet can lower blood pressure and cholesterol. If you want to get these benefits for the members of your family, consider adopting a furry friend soon.

    1. What Kind of Dog Should You Get?

Not all dogs are ideal for a family environment or lifestyle. Some factors that determine this include the dog’s history, attitude, emotional aptitude, and energy levels. Some dogs and dog breeds are friendlier and more sensitive to emotions than others.

The top breeds for families include the following:

    • Golden Retriever
    • Labrador Retriever
    • German Shepherd
    • Bulldog
    • Beagle
    • Poodle
    • French Bulldog
    • Yorkshire Terrier
    • German Shorthaired Pointer

Note that many other dog breeds will make good first dogs. However, these are some of the ones best considered as family dogs. You may also want to check out these Presa Canario puppies for sale.

A variety of other factors determine what makes a good family dog as well.

Consider breeds that are least likely to suffer health problems. Veterinary bills can cost a lot, so you want to avoid those if you can. You may also believe that it’s better to adopt an animal that isn’t going to suffer from its medical issues.

Will you get a grown dog or a puppy? That depends on what you think is best. You may want your kids to grow with the dog.

The trouble with taking care of puppies and children is that you may have to double your effort as a parent. Puppies, like kids, are energetic. They also need to get housetrained.

However, the advantage of getting adult dogs is that they are easier to take care of. Puppies need a lot of time for play and training. Adult dogs often already have house training and aren’t likely to chew on your furniture.

    1. What Are Good Family Dogs?

Let’s finally answer the question of what are good family dogs. One of the first things you need to look at is the temperament of the dog. Does it engage with your kids or other family members well? Is it social enough that it’ll make quick friends with your kids?

Certain dog breeds are great at being social and being with small kids. These friendly dogs are the ones that make good family dogs. That includes beagles, bearded collies, and Boston terriers.

Next, consider affordability. Greyhounds, collies, and Chihuahuas are some examples of dog breeds that are easier on the wallet. You want to look for low-cost dogs maintenance-wise.

Consider your living situation as well. If you have a home, it’ll be easier to care for large dog breeds. Otherwise, you may want to keep small dogs instead and those that are more tolerant of being indoors.

Get the Right Dog for Your Family

Indeed, dogs make the ideal best friend. Your kids may do better in life when they grow up with a pet dog. You are also likely to enjoy the companionship of a dog even as an adult.

That ends our guide on finding the perfect family dog. We hope you finally have the answers to the question of what are good family dogs. We also hope you learned something helpful about adopting a pooch for the family from this guide.

Of course, picking a dog breed is only the beginning. If you need more informative guides like this one, check out our other posts to learn how to take care of your pet and keep it happy with the family!

    Basics of Dog Sterilization

    Basics of Dog Sterilization

Sterilizing a dog is a necessity more than a choice as there are multiple ways in which your pet can benefit from it. It is a common and extremely safe procedure that ensures the optimal health of your dog for a long time. In this article, we would be discussing the basics of dog sterilization and why it is important for your dog.

    What is Dog Sterilization?

Sterilization is a surgery that makes a dog unable to produce offspring. One should know about three major terms when it comes to dog sterilization:

    • Spaying: This is the process of sterilization of a female pet. It is done by removing the ovaries of the pet.
    • Castration: The process of sterilizing the male pet by removing its testicles is known as castration.
    • Neuter: Neuter is a synonym for sterilization. This applies to both male as well as female pets.

    Benefits of Dog Sterilization

Sterilization leads to a healthier life for the dog and keeps it calm and composed. Dog sterilization has the following benefits:

    • Controls Population of Stray Dogs: Dogs have been known to chase their mating interest, leaving no scope for you to control. Mating with stray dogs can not only cause infections but also lead to an increase in the stray population. Sterilization is an effective way to control the stray dog population.
    • Curbs any Sense of Pseudo-Pregnancy: This is a condition in which a dog feels ‘like’ she is pregnant, even when she is not. Pseudo-pregnancy mostly prevails during the breeding season. The dog may feel discomfort during a pseudo-pregnancy. This can be easily avoided if the dog has been spayed.
    • Reduces Risk of Contact with Other Dogs: An unsterilized dog is mostly prone to a rush of hormones in the body. This can result in sexual arousal, causing the dog to chase other dogs for mating. This can result in infections or some cases, injuries.
    • Prevents Tumors and Cancers: Both males, as well as female dogs, are susceptible to tumors and cancers, some of which might even be fatal for the dog. Such a scenario can be easily avoided by sterilizing the dog.
    • Calms Down Aggressive Behavior: Dog sterilization also soothes aggressive pets. Unsterilized dogs often display extreme territorial behavior through different acts, such as urinating around the house, etc. Although dogs are territorial by nature, however, any extreme behavior by a dog is always a major concern.

    How to Sterilize a Dog?

The best person to get your dog sterilized from is a qualified vet. Depending on the medical condition of the dog, the vet can decide the best procedure to sterilize your dog. It is important to get a complete medical check-up of the dog before going in for sterilization. This would remove any jeopardy while giving anesthesia to the dog for surgery.

    When to Sterilize a Dog?

It is particularly important to get a female dog sterilized, especially before the first heat. However, regardless of the gender of the dog, it is best to get the dog sterilized at the age of 5 or 6 months. This is considered the best time for sterilization by many vets.

    Conclusion

The above article was an introduction to dog sterilization, its benefits, and the best time to get a dog sterilized. Make sure that you get your dog sterilized today as it ensures a healthy and happy life for your dog.

Common Pet Allergies and How to Treat Them

Common Pet Allergies and How to Treat Them

Did you know your pet can have allergies, just like people do? Read on to learn the common causes of pet allergies and how to treat them.

    pet allergies

Is your pet dealing with allergies?

It’s something every pet owner has to deal with eventually. All of a sudden, your friendly critter has come down with a serious case of pet allergies!

It can get rocky, and the reasons your pets have allergies vary, but staying at home is a major cause. This leads to their immune system not recognizing harmless substances. This makes their body slower in fighting against these.

Your fur babies won’t know why they’re having an allergic reaction. But you’ve got a secret weapon; down below we’ve listed some common pet allergies.

Read on to make sure your furry friend gets better in no time.

    1. Food Allergy

Food allergies are some of the most common pet allergies among dogs and cats.

While often mistaken for food intolerance, there’s a difference between the two. Food intolerance may lead to being averse to food, but it doesn’t involve the immune system.

The real problem of food allergies is when the immune system fights the enemy (food) each time. This often ends up resulting in worse health problems for your pets.

Pet allergy symptoms but not limited to:

    • Eye discharge
    • Ear and paw infection
    • Red eyes
    • Itchy skin and rashes
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea

Our pets, being pets, may have eaten almost anything that could trigger an allergic reaction. The cure is more of a method than a one-time cure-all. The most common way to treat food allergies is with an elimination diet

The elimination diet is where you try to identify exactly what kind of food they are allergic to. It often takes days or even weeks to know the source of the allergic reaction. This is best done with veterinarian help to minimize risks and to make your pet more comfortable.

    1. Seasonal Allergy

If you notice your pet getting rashes and itching around certain times of the year, it could be seasonal allergies acting up.

The allergens that could be causing it could range from pollen, grass, and mold to fungi. If your pet is active outside, then they may have had a run-in.

Things can get serious here if your pet tries to lick their skin to relieve the itchiness. That’s a quick way to receive a bacterial infection. If that happens, it’s advisable to go see your veterinarian immediately to get it treated.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

    • Watery eyes
    • Runny nose
    • Frequent sneezing
    • Ear infection

To treat this, a skin test helps veterinarians create a serum to grant your pet immunity to allergens. This could stop the allergic reaction from acting up again. Regular bathing your pet also helps wash away most allergens that might stick to their fur and skin.

Some medications help ease their symptoms like antihistamines. But keep in mind that it’ll have different reactions depending on the pet. As an option, you can use CBD oil for dogs with allergies to reduce itching, inflammation, and anxiety.

Remember, always consult with your veterinarian before trying any medicine on your pet.

    1. Inhalant Allergies

This is an airborne allergy also known as atopy or atopic dermatitis.

Inhalant and seasonal allergies are often compared to one another. But the leading difference between them is that an inhalant allergy can happen all year round.

An inhalant allergy also occurs when the allergen is constantly around your pet. This makes diagnosing the specific reason why difficult because it could be anything. It may get worse as inhalant allergies often develop, later on, making your pets allergic to something they weren’t before.

Symptoms might include but are not limited to:

    • Red bumps on the skin
    • Itchy skin
    • Hotspots in certain parts of the body
    • Biting and licking at their skin
    • Hair loss

The pet allergy treatments for inhalant allergies will vary depending on the severity of the symptoms. Pet allergy tests often have the vet injecting an allergen inside and waiting for a response.

The more direct method is to do some blood tests by getting samples from your pet and finding the antibodies. If the numbers of antibodies are high enough, then you can determine what is causing the allergy.

In the case of airborne allergies picked up through the skin, there are procedures like shampoo therapy. Here, you wash your pet with a hypoallergenic shampoo your vet recommends.

Keep in mind, however, that frequent washing dries out your pet’s skin and may lead to other problems.

    1. Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is a hypersensitivity to pests like a flea. Fleas thrive in various climates and are not easy to get rid of.

When fleas bite, they inject their host with their saliva. This saliva feels irritating and itchy for your pets, but this doesn’t always mean that they have a flea allergy.

With that said, you may still want to check for allergies. After all, it only takes one bite to trigger an allergic reaction.

    Flea allergy symptoms can include:

    • Severe itching
    • Frequent scratching
    • Flea bites
    • Hair loss
    • Skin Rashes

If you see signs or symptoms of a flea infestation, immediately take action. Visit your vet so they can do some skin or blood tests. This determines whether your pet has fleas or not.

Fleas could live anywhere, so make sure to clean and vacuum every nook and cranny of your house. A flea collar also helps get rid of fleas because it exudes a scent that repels them.

To soothe your pet’s itching, use a topical or injected medicine that heals damage done by excessive scratching. You can use pet shampoo to help ease the itching and reduce rashes.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the perfect place to start.

To cast eyes on this beautiful breed is to understand immediately how it earned its name.

For one thing, its head and torso are mottled and speckled in various shades of white, yellow/orange, black, and brown. Combine this coat with its lithe and athletic shape, and the Catahoula bears a keen resemblance to the big cat from which it’s named.

This is a hound of some acclaim as well. The Catahoula Leopard is renowned as the state dog of Louisana! Versatile, intelligent, and active, they make great working dogs too.

    1. Bergamasco Sheepdog

Few dogs stand out quite as much as the Bergamasco Sheepdog. The unique appearance of these ancient Italian pooches makes them one of the most unusual dogs breeds out there!

They boast a striking, dread-like coat of flowing locks that stretch almost to the ground.

These ‘flocks’ form when the hairs of their body weave together into tight matted layers designed to protect them from the cold. That was a big deal in the ice-cold alpine temperatures in which they were originally reared.

As pets, Bergamascos are fiercely loyal and lovable. They’re clever too, easy to train, and will guard the family as they did with their flocks in times of old.

    1. Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff is another mightily impressive working dog.

Originally from Tibet, they were bred to protect property and cattle from predators. Naturally, then, these Mastiffs are big, strong animals that make intimidating guard dogs. However, they’re definitely friendly giants, with intelligent, kind-hearted temperaments.

They’re sure to make incredible additions to the family. Just make sure you’ve got enough space to house them and time to give them sufficient exercise!

    1. Thai Ridgeback

Thai Ridgebacks are, as their name suggests, native to Thailand, in South East Asia.

Rarely seen anywhere else, they bare resemblance to the Rhodesian Ridgeback with which you may already be familiar. Both dogs have a similar stretch (aka a ‘ridge’) of hair on their backs that grows in the opposite direction to their coat.

You’d love the Thai Ridgeback for its intelligent, loyal, and protective nature. However, with oodles of energy, they’re sure to be a handful too.

    1. Norwegian Lundehund

The Lundehund is a small, adorable, fox-like dog that comes from a Norwegian Island called Vaeroy.

It was actually bred to hunt puffins, which, way back in the day, were a vital food source for the islanders. Lundehunds were well-suited to the task! With 6 toes on their paws and a hyper-flexible neck, they could navigate the rocky terrain and catch the puffins with greater ease.

Hunting prowess aside, they make loving, loyal, and energetic pets.

    1. Canaan

Canaans are an Israeli breed that would make ideal guard dogs.

Medium-sized dogs with pricked ears and a curved, bushy tail, they’re alert, territorial, and vocal in nature. Canaans are often touted as perfect companions on runs and hikes as well. Why? Because they’re fit and energetic animals that never tire when you’re out and about.

They need an alpha though, so be sure to assert yourself as the leader of the pack. Succeed, and you can expect a highly loyal and dependable dog that’ll be quick to warn you of anything untoward that’s happening.

    1. Otterhound

Otterhounds are regal, noble-looking dogs that originally comes from England.

They get their name from the task for which they were bred: hunting otters! It’s forbidden these days, but otter hunting was a favorite pastime of the medieval English. And otterhounds made the perfect companion on the hunts.

They’re natural-born swimmers, with big, strong bodies and webbed feet to boot. A waterproof coat and sensitive nose made them an otter’s worst nightmare.

With their warm and lively nature, though, you’re sure to love them.

    1. Azawakh

Azawakhs are another working dog with origins in foreign lands.

Coming from West Africa, Azawakhs are lean, lithe, and leggy members of the Sighthound family. That makes them ideal hunters, with impressive speed, eyesight, and a toughness that belies their elegant appearance.

They might be lethal in the Saharan Plains, but they’re incredibly affectionate hounds at home. Expect a loyal, loving, and independent member of the household that’ll love a good run around in the great outdoors.

    1. Karelian Bear Dog

Last but not least is the Karelian Bear Dog. A national treasure in their home country of Finland, they make amazing big game hunters thanks to their confidence, boldness, and keen sense of smell.

Karelians are fearless, robust animals that would be ideal for anybody in need of a guard dog too. Bred for hunting, though, they can be aggressive and energetic, which can make them a handful at home.
