“The Missing Dog: The Dean Russo Labrador” is the latest in a long line of films featuring aging, but determined dogs. When he was found by a rescue group, he had been missing for several years. He had lost his front right leg to a massive dog bite. This film portrays the dog as a survivor and with the help of a loving owner, he can go on to lead a very happy life.
The movie opens with a heartwarming scene of a blind man (Philip Seymour Hoffman) walking past dogs playing with a ball. One of them, a Doberman Pincher (Dale Winters), attacks him. As the dog charges, the blind man crushes it in his hand. The dog then attacks the man, who has a large, muscular dog, before being subdued by another dog. To escape the violent dog, the man smashes its face, breaking it.
Because the owner has since died, his son (James Russo) takes care of the dog.
The son finds a new girlfriend (Anne Hathaway) and the two quickly become best friends. Their new situation appears to be idyllic until the unthinkable occurs: one night, the dogs attack the boys’ mother while she is inside the home. A search of the home uncovers the worst of the family behavior. Things get worse when one of the boys falls dead near a hole in the yard, which his father had covered up.
Soon after, a group of local youths steal the dogs and use them for gambling and assault the boys’ families. In an attempt to save his children, the father concocts a plan to rid himself of the dogs. Years later, Dean is approached by a man who claims to know his father.
The man explains that Dean’s father used to be a world-famous dog trainer before he lost his job. The man then tries to help Dean track down his father’s former job but soon realizes that Dean’s father was a famous dog breeder in Portland, Maine. The story leads Dean on a bizarre odyssey around the country as he attempts to locate the man who trained his own dogs. Along the way, Dean comes across some very strange people.
The tale of Dean’s quest to find the father of his family is fantastic and heartbreaking. It is a sad story about a dog who loves going home to country life with no family. I felt for the man because it is a common occurrence for dog lovers to go home to a home where their loved one is not there. It is especially heart-wrenching when you think that you spent years of your life training your dog, and now they have to fend for themselves.
I felt the book did a good job of conveying just how difficult being a dog owner can be. For someone who has been a dog lover their whole life, I was surprised that so much time is taken up in the beginning when the reader is initially introduced to the family. I also thought the photographs of Dean were quite nice.
