The original European breeders who produced Great Danes originally bred these dogs to have their ears cropped. These dogs were originally bred to assist in the communication between two dogs or between a male and a female dog. Because of this, they were known as ‘crouched’ dogs.
Even though they were intended to remain like this, humans began to ‘manipulate’ them. The Great Danes were no longer cuddled up against each other but instead were more concerned with the protection and defense. Also, with this ‘manipulation’ they became a lot less pleasing to the eyes and made less of a favorable ‘pack’ packmate’ type of companion.
