AKC Dachshund Breeds and the Standard Color Combinations
The Akc Dachshund is a popular breed, and with good reason. They are outgoing, intelligent and full of energy! Their distinct markings and their high energy make them a joy to own. This breed will have the personality of the mix between a Yorkie and a Miniature Schnauzer, but with the look and feel of the Akc standard dog.
The Akc Dachshund has three common color patterns. They are: White and Black, Silver and Golden, and their coats come in many colors. The white and black patterns can be mixed or used for a variety of colors, and are usually used in mixes. The silver and golden colors are usually used for show quality breeding dogs, but they are also used for pet quality dogs as well. Sometimes the standard Akc Dachshund is crossbred with a miniature Dachshund to produce a silver or golden coated miniature dachshund.
The white and black dog coats differ from other AKC dachshund colors by having smaller, more pointed ears, with shorter, wider mouths.
The eyes are darker than the rest of the dog’s body, and they stand close to the head. The face has short and round ears, and its nose is often stuffed with hair. The paws are rounded, with the back and shoulders having little skin showing.
The Akc Dachshund comes in three different markings, and each one is related to one of the different dachshund colors. The first is called the ‘White Mark’. These are generally dark in color on the body, with white markings on the legs, and around the face. The eyes can be a creamy white or metallic blue. They have pointed ears and are otherwise regular in form and size.
The next type is called the ‘Fawn’ mark, and this is the second most common type. These come in various shades of cream or tan. The spots on the main body color can be almost any color, but the most commonly seen ones are chocolate brown and tan, with some shades being more yellow than others. The eyes can be fawn, pinkish, or even light brown. These dogs do not have the wide set ears of their full bred counterparts, but they do have big round eyes that are highly intelligent.
The third, and final, breed specification is the ‘Fur’ pattern.
This is a natural color found in many breeds, and it does not refer to any kind of genetic defect. The fur on an AKC Dachshund is found to be double layered, with most of it falling on the back. It also has some medium-length hair tufts along the sides of the head, which are often referred to as “crests”.
The AKC Standard lists three colors for the Standard, including the popular ‘True Red’. The Standard calls for the color to be one of the purest reds available, but the AKC recognizes many colors as True Red. AKC has never accepted the word ‘True Red’ as referring to the ‘Dalmatian’. It is believed by many AKC observers that the term is derived from the ‘Dalmatian’ breed standard, and that the AKC has never allowed the ‘True Red’ to appear on the Standard.
Though the AKC has never approved of colored AKC Dachshunds, most showmasters prefer them anyway. These miniature dogs are very cute, energetic and intelligent. Their lively nature, coupled with their size (between twelve and fifteen inches when they are a pup) make them ideal companions for kids, and are good training animals. They are also very comical with their meek personalities, great sense of humor, and easy trainability.
