In the United States and Canada, the American Kennel Club recognizes three breeds of dog: the Standard Poodle, the Dachshund, and the Alaskan Husky. All Things Dachshund. This can be a very expensive undertaking though. Most of the organizations that care for animals in the central Texas area have a budget to cover the cost of caring for the animals that come to their doors.
When an animal comes into the central Texas area, the first thing the staff at the shelter will do is assess the situation and see what needs to be done. The staff will determine if the dog will need a medical examination and what the odds are of the dog being able to find its way back to its owner. If the dog cannot be adopted, the staff will work with a private, non-profit agency to find it a good, loving, permanent home. The goal of the rescue organization is to save as many pets as possible, which can be quite a challenge given the sheer number of dogs and cats that are in the area.
Dogs and cats that come to the Houston or Dallas animal shelter for whatever reason will be evaluated first.
The dog or cat will be examined by the State of Texas Board of Veterinary Medical care and required to undergo a battery of tests. These tests will include a complete physical, genetic and behavioral report. After this report is received the dog or cat will be referred to a veterinary center that offers extensive medical care for animals.
